The University

SURC is one of Yorkshire’s best performing uni rowing clubs, and the University is rated 78th in world, 13th in the UK and top in Yorkshire and the Humber in the 2020 QS World University Rankings.

A world-class Russell Group university, with a unique student experience and known for having the Number 1 Students’ Union for ten years running, Sheffield is a great place both to study and live. Outside of the university itself, which ranks among the top in the UK for student experience, Sheffield is a major city with a strong sense of community, known for being inexpensive. A cultural centre on the edge of the Peak District national park, Sheffield is a special place, a city that leaves its mark.

The university offers a wide range of subjects across six faculties, and is well known for its courses in engineering, architecture, medicine and dentistry, and much more. Sheffield can lay claim to five Nobel Prize winners among its alumni and faculty, as well as alumni such as the authors Hilary Mantel and Lee Child, the 2012 Olympic gold-winner Jessica Ennis-Hill, chemist and first Briton in space Helen Sharman, and the first woman to fly solo from Britain to Australia, Amy Johnson.

The Boat Club

Sheffield University Rowing Club is a rapidly expanding club embodying enthusiasm, discipline and teamwork. We are a highly driven club, with a commitment to our development and expansion, and to the achievement and excellence of our athletes.

Since its foundation in 1964, the club has gone from strength to strength. With significant updates to our fleet throughout the years, and a growing reputation in competitive rowing, SURC now has over 100 committed athletes across four squads. SURC is one of the few sports clubs in the university to hold Lead Performance status.

Alongside our training, we are active members in the local community. Last year, SURC completed over 185 hours of volunteering in local schools, retirement homes and in our fundraising efforts for the Sheffield Children’s Hospital, which thanks to match funding raised over £4000.

ANECDOTES FROM PAST AND PRESENT MEMBERS

“I rowed before uni, and I chose to continue rowing at SURC because it was an incredibly welcoming and friendly group of likeminded people, and I’ve made some of my best friends through SURC. The club has given me the opportunities to excel as an athlete, whilst studying for a degree at a world class university”
